Is Gambling Legal in Maryland?

Yes, Maryland gambling has been legal for some time. But it’s taken until 2021 for the Old Line State to join some of its neighbors in regulating online gambling, such as sports betting.

In March 2021, HB 940 was overwhelmingly passed through the Maryland House. The final version was signed by Gov. Larry Hogan a month later. In short, sports betting will be in Maryland! Online MD casinos did not make the cut; those remain illegal.

To gamble online in MD, you must be 21 years or over. Maryland residents 18 and older will have access to gambling options like state lottery tickets, pari-mutuel race betting and bingo.

You will be subject to an MD gambling winnings tax if you win big. Your winnings will be subject to an 8.75% tax if you live in the state. Non-residents have to cough up 7%. Win more than $5,000 in the Maryland lottery and your federal and state taxes will be automatically deducted.
